Alessandra's Artistic Approach

As a child I walked the streets of Florence and absorbed, through my skin and eyes, lights and scents of the Italian Renaissance, until folly. As a teenager, I met my first love at the feet of plaster copies of Michelangelo's sculptures, in the dust of the oldest Italian Gypso library. I practiced the life of the apprentice of "Bottega" without even knowing what I was doing and I ended up making a perfect circle like Giotto, the shepherd, drawing on the stones of his pasture. The "Art," that was it! Then I crossed the big pond and I tried to do something else. My research has developed around the concepts of permanence, temporality of movement in space and time, using different mediums such as new technologies of the image, or use of materials from the origins of the world (wood, cloth, rope, sand, stone ...).

Since 2013 I've made a return to the traditional techniques inherited from my Florentine origins, through large acrylic paintings on canvas, where the self-portrait is transfigured, for a celebration of the Women’s magnitude and depth of her connection with nature. I illustrated, again, the relationship between the female being and her world, I seek the sense of identity drawn within oneself which transcends gender identifications, places and culture.

These themes are materialized by superimposed layers of transparency and thick paint, the decorative aspect which should not delude ourselves: all these layers and these thicknesses are only correspondence gesture to the repetition of days and nights of the universal woman, a constant back and forth between the inside and the outside, of which I am the spokeswoman.

Biography

Born in Italy, Alessandra Di Noto has lived in Canada since 1987. She studied design and staging at the Art Institute and the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, as well as live drawing, painting, textile art and anatomy at the Duperré school in Paris. Passionate about art and cinema, the Italian-Canadian artist was admitted at Université of Québec à Trois-Rivières in 1994, thereby accessing technical resources which enabled her to achieve numerous artistic productions in painting, drawing, blown glass, bronze and aluminum sculpting, holography and videography. In 1997, she presented her first solo exhibition at Trois-Rivieres: Small Stories of the World, a collection of intimate holographic works, where small everyday objects magically reappeared in the soul of tree trunks. Thereafter, production moved towards interactive multimedia for personal publications and for other artists.

Since 2013, Di Noto is working on Ladies Collection, large acrylic paintings on canvas, where the self-portrait is transfigured to celebrate the grandeur of women and the depth of their relationship with nature. Holding a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master in Communication, the Italian-Canadian artist has participated in numerous exhibitions in painting, sculpture and multimedia installations. Throughout her multidisciplinary production, she has shown, in various ways, the relationship between women and their inner and outer worlds, and among other topics, poetically evoked feelings towards migration, gender identifications, locations and culture.
